Ten South Florida Cities Named in the Top 25 Most Dangerous Cities to Drive in the State

West Palm Beach Business Litigation Attorney 2023-01-26 16-49-13

On October 16th, 2024, the Miami Herald published information about a study that looked at the most dangerous cities for traffic safety across the United States. Florida was found to be the 13th most dangerous state for motorists in the country. Researchers also highlighted the 25 most dangerous cities for drivers in Florida. Within this blog post, our Florida truck accident lawyer provides an overview of the most dangerous cities for motorists in our state.

An Overview of the Most Dangerous Cities for Drivers in South Florida

Researchers from a group called the Truck Parking Club—a company based in Georgia—reviewed comprehensive data collected by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). That data focused on population-adjusted traffic fatalities. The cities with the highest traffic fatality rate were deemed to be more dangerous. Notably, 10 cities in just 3 of Florida’s 67 counties—those being Miami-Dade County, Broward County, and Palm Beach County—have the dubious distinction of making the list of the 25 most dangerous municipalities for drivers. Here is an overview:

  • Miami: 23rd most dangerous
  • Delray Beach: 22nd most dangerous
  • Boca Raton: 21st most dangerous
  • Boynton Beach: 14th Pompano Beach
  • West Palm Beach: 12th most dangerous
  • Hollywood: 11th most dangerous
  • Miami Gardens: 10th most dangerous
  • Davie: 7th most dangerous
  • Pompano Beach: 6th most dangerous
  • Fort Lauderdale: 4th most dangerous

For reference, Panama Beach was determined to be the most dangerous city for traffic safety in Florida. It had 19 fatalities in 2023. On a population adjusted basis, Panama Beach had 4.4 times as many traffic deaths as the national average. The second most dangerous city for drivers in Florida was Daytona Beach—which is another popular spring break destination.

Semi-Truck Accidents are Especially Dangerous

Fatal motor vehicle collisions can happen in a wide range of different ways. With that being said, semi-truck accidents are especially hazardous. A fully loaded big rig can weigh up to 80,000 pounds. It dwarfs a standard passenger vehicle—and large trucks pose an especially serious safety risk to motorcyclists, bicyclists, and pedestrians. Although large trucks make up only about 4 percent of all registered vehicles, they are involved in nearly 10 percent of all fatal crashes on American roads. Nationwide, approximately 5,000 people are killed in commercial truck accidents each year. Around three quarters of the victims were outside of the truck when the crash happened—meaning they are occupants of other vehicles or pedestrians/cyclists.
