One Killed, Four Injured After a Car Crashes into Church in North Miami
According to a report from WSVN 7 News, one person was killed and four other people were injured in a tragic car accident in North Miami. A spokesperson for the North Miami Police Department told reporters that a white sedan crashed into the wall of a church, causing considerable damage to the building. Thankfully, no one was inside the church at the time of the collision.
Law enforcement officers believe that all of the people harmed in the collision were occupants of the vehicle. The car crash occurred after midnight, near the intersection of Dixie Highway and 140th Street. Though, some of the details were still unclear at the time of reporting. North Miami Police are still trying to determine who was driving at the time of the wreck. At this point, no charges have been filed and the accident is still under investigation.
Motor Vehicle Accidents are the Leading Cause of Death for Young People
Unfortunately, car accidents remain a very serious safety problem in the United States. While most people have a general understanding of the dangers of auto accidents, many people do not realize just how much devastation crashes cause each year. Our young people are at a heightened risk.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) reports that car accidents are the leading cause of death nationwide for people between the ages of 13 and 25. For people between the ages of 26 and 44, motor vehicle accidents are the third leading cause of death.
A True National Problem: Every Community is Affected By Auto Accidents
In many ways, car accidents are a tragic equalizer across all sections of society. No community in Florida is spared from the devastation of accidents. Crashes impact every community—from our largest urban centers to our most rural areas.
- In 2018, there were more than 64,627 crashes in Miami-Dade County alone. Collectively, these accidents resulted in 31,270 injuries and 293 fatalities.
- In Broward County, there were 41,082 accidents reported, leading to 24,644 injuries and 237 fatalities.
- In Palm Beach County, there were 26,962 crashes, with 16,046 reported injuries and 183 fatalities.
The takeaway is clear: We must do more to improve traffic safety across the entire region. Far too many lives are being lost or destroyed because of motor vehicle accidents. Car accidents are not unavoidable. The overwhelming majority of wrecks occur because of negligence by one or more parties.
